SUMMARY:Thanksgiving Morning Run
DESCRIPTION: Thanksgiving Morning Run – A Heartwarming ORC Tradition\nBefore the turkey goes in the oven and the parade hits the screen\, the Ocean Running Club gathers for one of our favorite traditions of the year — the Thanksgiving Morning Run! \nJoin us at 8:30 AM on Thanksgiving morning at the Island Heights Post Office for a relaxed and festive run along the quiet streets and scenic river views. It’s not a race — it’s about friends\, fresh air\, and a little pre-feast movement to make that second slice of pie taste even better. \nEach year\, runners show up bundled in layers\, coffee cups in hand\, sharing smiles and stories before setting off together. Some bring their favorite Thanksgiving treats — homemade desserts\, donuts\, and plenty of coffee to share after the run. The atmosphere is light\, the laughter is easy\, and the sense of community is strong. \nWhether you’re logging a few miles before family time or just want to reconnect with your running friends\, come join us. Bring your friends\, your family\, and maybe a treat or two — because Thanksgiving morning with ORC is all about gratitude\, good company\, and a reminder of how lucky we are to share the miles together. \nThis year’s run carries special meaning. The Ocean Running Club recently lost a beloved fixture of our running community — Tom DeBartolo. Tom has been part of every Thanksgiving morning run since the very first one\, always showing up with a smile and a love for the sport that inspired everyone around him. We would like to dedicate this year’s run in his honor — a celebration of friendship\, tradition\, and the joy he brought to every mile. \nSee you Thanksgiving morning in Island Heights — the perfect way to start the holiday\, and to remember one of our own.

SUMMARY:5th Annual Survivor Day 5K
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\nThe 5th Annual Survivor Day 5K will take place on November 23\, 2024 in person at 5 Wanamaker Municipal Complex\, Island Heights\, NJ 08732. Register by November 1st to ensure you get to pick your T-shirt size!  After November 1st\, we cannot guarantee your size. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\nSurvivor Day was designated by the U.S. Congress as a day when those affected by suicide can join together for healing and support. It was designated the Saturday before Thanksgiving\, as the holidays are often a difficult time for suicide loss survivors. \nFor the 5th year in a row we are asking all of our family and friends to come together in unity to run or walk a 5K in memory of Christian Schenk and in support of all those mourning his loss the week before his birthday. \nThis year we will also honor Anthony “Butchie” Kurnel III. Butchie was born and raised in Bayville\, NJ\, and served as a Lieutenant for 23 years at Berkeley Township Police department. Butchie was a husband\, father of 3\, and a proud grandfather to Anthony. He was the cornerstone to his family and held such a bright presence in the community. He was 55 years old when he lost his life to the silent killer of mental health and suicide. His legacy will live on as we remember the countless lives he has touched\, all the laughs we’ve had and all of the people he’s lent his hand out to help. We remember Butchie\, not only for the challenges he faced\, but for the joy he brought to everyone\, his dedication to his family\, and the care that he brought to every aspect of life. \nThe anniversary of Anthony’s and Christian’s deaths are stark reminders of the lasting effects that loss and grief have on surviving families as well as the importance of bringing communities together to support one another.
