After a busy, hot July of XC races, the cooler temps felt great as I got back to road racing. While most of my Shore AC teammates were flying through Asbury Park, a few of us headed to the west side of NJ for the Three Bridges 5 Mile.
This was my second time running it, and I wanted to beat last year’s time and run a smart race. It’s one of the hilliest races of the year, but I’m happy to say I nailed it. I started strong—but not too fast—and kept a steady, quick pace through the first 3+ hilly miles. I stayed relaxed, even letting a few runners get ahead early, knowing I’d reel them in later.
With one mile to go, I kicked it up, passed several runners, and pushed hard to the finish. I beat last year’s time by 4 minutes and 24 seconds! That got me a top-20 finish overall and 2nd in my age group.
It was just 42 seconds off my PR for the distance—and considering all the hills, I’d say I’m right there. Feeling strong and ready for a great fall racing season!
