I got a text from my friend Petra asking if I was interested in running a race on the Barnegat Trail on November 3, 2024. I thought about it for a second and replied, “Hmm, maybe.” Then, I realized she meant the very next day—tomorrow, in fact. After a quick pause, I thought about how much we all love running on that trail, and I texted back, “Okay, I’m in!”
It turned out to be the Ocean County Foundation for Vocational & Technical Education (OCVTS) Turkey Trot 5K, and let me tell you, I’m so glad I said yes. Not only did I get to run, but I also spent time with friends, including Robin Gialanella and Krystal Backus from our running club. It was one of those mornings where everything just clicked.
The race started, and off we went. My mind was in a great place, but my legs… not so much. I had to throw in a little walking here and there, but I still ran with the kind of joy I haven’t felt in years. By the time I crossed the finish line, I had the biggest smile on my face—plus, nothing fell off! That’s always a win, right?
The race was held on the beautiful Barnegat Trail, which helped keep my legs feeling good throughout, and when we finished, there was a fantastic spread of food waiting for us. Big thanks to the race organizers for making it such a fun experience, and to Petra for the brilliant idea to sign up. I’m so grateful I joined in!
