Escape the Cape Triathlon: A Tradition Like No Other
Lower Township, New Jersey – The 12th time should feel routine, but the thrill of leaping off the Cape May–Lewes Ferry never gets old. The Escape to Cape Triathlon once again delivered an unforgettable experience, with the ferry Miss New Jersey serving as the iconic launch point for athletes ready to take the plunge.
The day started warm and overcast—ideal race conditions for some, but the unexpected chill in the water (nearly 10 degrees colder than usual) caught many by surprise. For the first time, jellyfish made an appearance during the swim, adding an extra jolt of adrenaline. Despite the added challenge, swimmer safety was top-notch. Lifeguards from Wildwood, North Wildwood, Lower Township, and Cape May lined the water alongside State Police, Marine Police, the U.S. Coast Guard, and local support vessels, providing a secure and well-monitored course from start to finish.
Out on the bike, athletes were treated to a closed course—no traffic, just wind. And this year, the wind was relentless, making the ride a serious test of strength and focus. But with the clouds blocking the heat, most riders were thankful not to be battling the sun as well.
Then came the run—always the true test at Escape the Cape. After exiting the ferry terminal, runners face nearly a mile of unforgiving asphalt. Thankfully, the sun stayed hidden, but the difficulty ramps up fast. Runners hit the sand for a quarter-mile stretch to the turnaround, then head back up to the pavement before one final descent to the beach for a sand-filled mile to the finish.
Brutal, beautiful, and completely unique—Escape to Cape never disappoints. For me, this marks twelve years in a row, and every year brings new challenges and unforgettable moments. If you’re looking for a race that combines adrenaline, grit, unmatched safety support, and a little bit of Jersey shore magic—this is it.
