Book Review of “ The Sports Gene” by David Epstein.
This book studies elite athletes across many sports, including sprinting and marathon running. The author examines scientific studies to determine how and why some athletes excel. Is the answer genetics or opportunity and training? If you are excited about science, this book is for you. But, you’ll find the stories and the takeaways interesting and relevant even if science is not your strong suit. Larry P.
Running through healing
My journey the past few months has been nothing less then bittersweet. Back in October 2023 I pulled a hamstring (figured out that dry needling and lots of stretching helped) and had planters fictitious in both feet, after months of cycling through a variety of running shoes, numerous podiatrist appointments, I was diagnosed with a stress fracture in my left heal, it was devastating to think I couldn’t run and was told I needed to take 5-6 weeks to heal.I was in the process of attempting to train for the Jersey City Marathon in April and was devastated. Running has [...]

Here are some training hacks specifically tailored for masters athletes: Focus on Mobility and Flexibility: Incorporate regular mobility and flexibility exercises into [...]
ROCK-N-ROLL HALF MARATHON D.C.
Congratulations to all Ocean Running Club members who participated in the Rock-n-Roll half marathon in the nation's capital this weekend! It sounds like it was quite the adventure, with pristine weather and challenging but rewarding terrain. Starting with temperatures in the mid-40s and rising to 52 degrees at the race start must have been perfect for running. The course seems to have offered a mix of flat stretches and challenging climbs, reminiscent of parts of the Marine Corps Marathon. The 1.6-mile climb after Foggy Bottom and Georgetown sounds particularly tough, but it's great to hear that the event was well-supported [...]
