ORC Runners Shine at the Polar Bear Races
Ocean Running Club runners braved the chill and delivered strong performances on the iconic Asbury Park Boardwalk at the 62nd Annual Asbury Park Polar Bear Races, sponsored by the Shore Athletic Club. Originally scheduled for December 27, 2024, the race was postponed due to a winter storm—but the reschedule didn’t cool off the competition.
ORC had an impressive showing in the 5K, with several age group winners:
-
Peter Foytlin (21:05.82) – 1st, 50–54
-
John Delaney (20:42.61) – 1st, 55–59
-
Brian Hanlon (21:17.18) – 1st, 60–64
-
Larry Perlberg (26:29.34) – 1st, 70–74
Not to be outdone, ORC women also made the podium:
-
Laura Perlberg (30:33.28) – 2nd, 70–74
-
Catherine Salvio (33:47.09) – 3rd, 70–74
Race day conditions were classic winter racing: clear skies, light winds, and a brisk 25 degrees. Runners were grateful for the warmth and camaraderie before and after the race inside Asbury Park’s Convention Hall.
Held annually between Christmas and New Year’s Day, the Polar Bear Races are festive, competitive, and welcoming to all—runners, walkers, race walkers, and even 1-milers. It’s the perfect way to close out your racing year and kick off the New Year with friends, fitness, and fun.
